Egypt military, Islamist leaders at odds

Cairo --

Egypt's powerful military is showing signs of growing impatience with the country's Islamist leaders, indirectly criticizing their policies and issuing thinly veiled threats that it might seize power again.

The tension is raising the specter of another military intervention much like the one in 2011, when generals replaced longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak after they sided with antigovernment protesters in their 18-day popular uprising.

The strains come at a time when many Egyptians are despairing of an imminent end to the crippling political impasse between President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood group on one side, and the mostly secular and liberal opposition on the other.

The tug of war between the two camps is being waged against a grim backdrop of spreading unrest, rising crime and a worsening economy.

"In essence, the military will not allow national stability or its own institutional privileges to come under threat from a breakdown in Egypt's social fabric or a broad-based civil strife," said Michael Hanna, an Egypt expert from the Century Foundation in New York.

"This is not an ideological army or one that seeks to destabilize civilian governance. ... But it is also not an army that will sit by while the country reaches the tipping point on the path to civil strife."

The latest friction began when a rumor circulated that Morsi planned to replace Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, his defense minister and the army chief, because of his resistance to bringing the military under the sway of the Brotherhood-dominated government.

El-Sissi may have angered Morsi last month when he signaled the military's readiness to step in, warning that the state would collapse if no solution was found to the political crisis.

In another provocative comment earlier this month, el-Sissi was quoted as saying he would never allow the armed forces to be dominated by the Brotherhood, or any other group, stressing the military's national identity.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Yasser Mehrez, dismissed claims that the group sought to bring the military under its sway. "This is old talk that has been repeated over and over again," he said.

5 Reasons Why You Should Stop Blaming Your Ex - Huffington Post

When you blame another for your unhappiness and your pain -- no matter how much it appears to be directly caused by them -- you end up hurting yourself even more. By placing blame on others, you put the responsibility of resolving your negative emotions and healing your pain onto somebody else. And by putting that responsibility in another's hands, you give away your personal power. In addition, when you blame another for your misery, you also lose control over your life. This power and control is then given to whomever and wherever you can point the finger. Is that what you really want? I don't think so.

Blaming others may give you temporary relief, but it will come back to haunt you repeatedly in the form of your ever-expanding suffering. There are a number of negative effects of blame which contribute to this. Here are the top five:

1. Blame keeps you stuck in negative feelings such as anger, bitterness and resentment. This will undoubtedly manifest as chronic pain -- physical, emotional and psychological.
2. Blame keeps you from learning from your mistakes, which results in making the same ones over again.
3. Blame gives control of your life to another. It robs you of your personal power.
4. Blame makes you the victim, which attracts more behaviors that tend to victimize you further.
5. Blame makes you weak and powerless, and makes the person you are blaming appear more powerful.

Blame has a sneaky way of undermining you. You think you're holding someone accountable and maybe even secretly punishing them to some degree. But this type of punishment never works. To understand the difference between blame and accountability, let's take a look at the dictionary's definition of both:
Accountable; 1. Answerable. 2. Capable of being explained.
Blame; 1. To hold responsible; find fault with; censure. 2. To place the responsibility for.

You can hold someone accountable without actually blaming them for your unhappiness or pain. You can do this by taking responsibility for how you think, feel and act in response to their action and behaviors. For example, within the context of divorce, you can respond by addressing your hurt feelings and by caring for yourself in ways that strengthen, support, nurture and nourish your overall well-being. Once you do, you have more positive energy to create something new for yourself. This way you get out from being an eternal victim and get into being in charge of your life again.

It's important to understand that, ultimately, you and you alone are the only person responsible for your life and how you think, feel and act. And only by accepting that responsibility do you have the power to change it. By shifting the responsibility onto someone or something else, you avoid getting to the core of what the problem is and thereby perpetuate that problem even further. Take back your power and control over your life by asking, "What" the problem is, not "Who" the problem is. This will reveal the core of what you need healed and you will begin to climb out of your negative abyss. Soon you'll be healed and your wound will only be a past memory. And hey, you may even look back on this situation and see it as the blessing in disguise it truly is. Trust me -- it really is a blessing after all.

Photo: IBTimes

LG Electronics announced Monday the XL version of their Optimus G Pro device.

Releasing on Wednesday in Korea, and 2nd quarter in North American and Japanese markets, the Optimus G Pro will carry a 5.5 inch, 1080p display. The phone's screen is crisp, with a pixel density of 400 pixels per inch. It's the first phone tablet phablet to come with a Snapdragon 600 processor.?

This updated version carries along with it a larger battery than the model announced last month in Japan, weighing in at 3,140 mAh. The device also comes with a 13 megapixel camera and 2GB of RAM.

LG's Optimus G Pro will be offered in their home country for the price of 968,000 won, or about $897 US dollars. Presumably the phone is being sold unlocked overseas and the price may be less, coupled with a contract, when it reaches our shores.

The phone is in the same class of device as gadgets like Samsung's Galaxy Note. With 5.5 inches of liquid crystal, these devices occupy a space between smartphone and tablet. Though looking at the popularity of the Galaxy Note, one may notice these size devices are becoming more and more commonplace.?

Marriage Equality Activists 'Have Never Been More Hopeful'

A number of wins these past few weeks for proponents of same-sex marriage have fueled an unprecedented level of optimism, said Stuart Gaffney, a board member of Marriage Equality USA.

With a marriage bill passing the Illinois Senate, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's step forward on extending benefits to same-sex military spouses, the president's renewed support for their movement and two pivotal Supreme Court cases pending, Gaffney said supporters "have never been more hopeful."

"We are really hoping that this year will be the greatest year ever for the freedom to marry in the United States," Gaffney told ABC News Friday. "There's so many historic firsts that have been happening, day after day."

Here is a look at what steps forward - and back - proponents of same-sex marriage have taken this week:

President Obama's SOTU Shout-Out to Same-Sex Couples

President Obama gave a brief but noteworthy mention to same-sex couples in his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

"It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country - the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead no matter where you come from, what you look like or who you love," the president told members of Congress and their guests in Statuary Hall.

That small shout-out was a step back from the level of support he showed in his inaugural address. Obama directly compared the gay rights struggle to such civil rights movements as the women's movement and the fight for racial equality during his swearing-in ceremony.

That speech was considered historic because it was the first time a president included the issue of gay rights in an inaugural address.

Panetta Adds to List of Benefits Available to Same-Sex Military Spouses

While it wasn't a full approval of what activists were asking for, an announcement this week by Panetta significantly increased the resources available to military members' same-sex spouses.

Panetta added 22 new benefits - including access to child care - to the list of those extended to same-sex partners.

The Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman and is up for consideration by the Supreme Court this year, precludes same-sex military spouses from receiving many of the additional benefits for which advocates have asked.

One of the unmet demands was burial at Arlington National Cemetery, but a decision from the Veterans' Affairs bureau Thursday could signal changing attitudes towards that policy.

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki decided to allow retired Lt. Col. Linda Campbell to bury the ashes of her wife in a national military cemetery Friday.

Illinois Senate Approves Gay Marriage Bill

In what the Chicago Tribune called a " Valentine's Day victory," the Illinois Senate voted to legalize marriage for same-sex couples Thursday.

If the legislation passes in the House and is signed by Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, it would make Illinois the 10th state to allow same-sex marriage. But it would not allow residents of Illinois who marry under the law to receive federal benefits, like those available under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Senators Encourage Obama to End Workplace Discrimination

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., led a group of 37 senators in sending a letter to President Obama on Valentine's Day, asking him to sign an executive order to protect GLBT workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the Washington Post reported.

According to the White House website, President Obama believes workplace protection "should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity."

Woman in Army National Guard Seeking Benefits for Spouse Dies

Jeanne Shaheen took to the Senate floor Thursday to tell the story of Charlie Morgan, a New Hampshire woman in the Army National Guard who died of breast cancer Sunday after fighting to get benefits for her wife and their 4-year-old daughter, according to The Associated Press.

Sen. Shaheen, D-N.H., posted a video of her floor speech on Twitter and YouTube.

Morgan's wife, Karen, spoke of hope for marriage equality at her funeral in Portsmouth, N.H.

""I'll be on the courthouse steps with your picture when DOMA goes down," she said, according to the Seacoast Online. "I'll see you there. It's a date."

Shaheen introduced a bill with Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in Charlie Morgan's name that would require DOD to recognize same-sex marriages performed in states like New Hampshire where such practices are legal.
