Credit funds get boost from JP Morgan loss: survey

LONDON (Reuters) - The type of hedge funds that bet against JP Morgan and made money from its $5.8 billion "London Whale" trading loss has risen to the top of investors' buying lists for the coming quarter, a survey showed.

Of 157 investors polled across the globe, 53 percent said they planned to allocate cash to credit relative value funds in the coming quarter, according to Credit Suisse's mid-year Hedge Fund Investor Survey.

This hedge fund strategy seeks to profit from dislocations in fixed income markets, and many have performed well this year after taking advantage of the U.S. bank's losing position in credit derivatives.

Robert Leonard, global head of Capital Services at Credit Suisse, said news of the funds' gains from the JP Morgan loss probably boosted the appeal of the strategy. Investors are also demanding trading styles that are less exposed to the economic headwinds causing havoc elsewhere.

"Investors have got plenty of volatility in their book right now. They are looking for strategies that are less volatile, and I think credit is one of those," he told Reuters.

The credit relative value fund strategy was the fifth most popular when Credit Suisse conducted an earlier survey, before JP Morgan's loss came to light.

By comparison, 50 percent of the investors said they planned to increase their allocation to global macro funds, which were the most sought type of fund at the start of the year, the survey showed.

In May, JP Morgan reported a $2 billion trading loss, which then swelled to $5.8 billion, after the bank's Chief Investment Office made bets now known as "the London Whale trades" on derivatives linked to corporate debt.

The loss proved an embarrassment for the bank and led to criticism of boss Jamie Dimon. The outsized bets also distorted the price of certain credit derivatives and offered shrewd hedge funds a chance to profit when the bank was eventually forced to sell.

According to Hedge Fund Research, the HFRI Relative Value (Total) Index was up 4.18 percent to mid-July, more than double the 1.87 percent average hedge fund gain.

Some individual credit relative value funds have performed even better.

BlueMountain, the firm co-founded by Andrew Feldstein, has seen its Credit Alternatives Fund rise by more than 10 percent by mid-July, while Brevan Howard's Credit Catalysts Fund was up more than 7 percent, private investor data shows.

Some funds such as Boaz Weinstein's Saba Capital have since exited their bets against JP Morgan, but other managers still remain confident dislocations elsewhere in credit markets will offer new opportunities, fund sources said.

Meanwhile, the results of the Credit Suisse survey may worry managers of equity long-short funds.

Yet to rebound from a poor 2011, the strategy is set to suffer the most withdrawals in the coming quarter as 26 percent of investors indicated that they planned to cut exposure.

"The good news is we haven't see a big exodus from the space ... But I do think in the second half of the year, that is going to be a different story. It's going to be a time when a lot of investors draw conclusions based on how their managers perform," Leonard said.

More than four-fifths of investors polled expect to make allocations to hedge funds in the coming quarter, and 63 percent indicated that they had made allocations in the past quarter, the survey found.

Bedbugs, penny auctions, gold buying-companies and solicitations for home improvement work disguised as ?free? energy audits are among the newest complaints that local and state consumer protection agencies dealt with during the past 12 months, according to a survey released Tuesday.

The fastest-growing complaints in the survey by advocacy groups the Consumer Federation of America and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators involved debt collection abuses, Do Not Call list violations, mortgage-related problems and home improvement scams.

The report?s top 10 complaints include familiar issues, such as auto sales and repair and credit/debt issues. But a set of real estate related complaints cracked the top 10 for the first time?covering issues with timeshare sales and resales, retirement and assisted living facilities and real estate fraud. Tenant bedbug problems and home repair firms using high energy bills to dupe consumers were among the fastest-growing complaint categories, giving consumer agencies around the country a new set of?issues to deal with.?

The agencies' report was generated by a survey of 38 state, county and city consumer protection agencies from 22 states from March 2011 through May 2012.

?State and local agencies are essential components of the consumer protection system in the United States,? said Susan Grant, director of consumer protection at CFA. ?Their services save consumers and businesses money, relieve the burden on courts, foster confidence in government, keep the public safe, and help ensure fairness in the marketplace.??

In Georgia, the Governor?s Office of Consumer Protection told surveyors that more than 100 consumers complained that a penny auction company named Wavee charged their credit cards $179 for "bid credits" without their permission after they signed up. After an investigation, Wavee refunded more than $1 million to 16,000 consumers.? In another penny auction case, iTicketBid.com refunded $22,000 to Georgia consumers when it allegedly failed to deliver sporting events tickets and other merchandise.

In Virginia, the Fairfax County Department of Cable and Consumer Services said it fielded numerous consumer complaints that a debt collection agency was taking money from their bank accounts without their knowledge or consent.

"In one case, a consumer said that she had paid her dentist directly for the $40 she owed him, but in the meantime the collection agency that the dentist hired took the account information from her check and created a ?remotely authorized? check in her name to electronically debit $30 for late fees from her bank account," the report said.?

In Florida, the state's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said bogus "free energy audit" solicitation phone calls were among the fastest-growing Do Not Call violation complaints.? Callers often falsely claimed that because the audit was free, the call was not subject to the restrictions of the Do Not Call law.?

The Pinellas County (Fla.) Department of Justice and Consumer Services reported that consumers also received postcards or flyers promising free audits to help lower their utility bills.

"In one case, the consumer was told that his electric bill would be reduced by at least $130 a month and that he was eligible for a $360 rebate from the federal government if he agreed to have a special ?energy efficient radiant barrier? that was used by NASA installed in his home," the agency said. "He was pressured into opening a $5,800 line of credit for the work. The company started the job but never completed it."

The fastest-growing set of complaints to the California Department of Consumer Affairs involved bogus locksmiths and other firms that practice without proper licensing.? Locksmiths use the Internet to advertise low prices to consumers in crises, including being locked out of their homes. But after disassembling locks, they often sharply raise their quoted prices.? The department said it forced several such security companies to close, and made hundreds of others obtain proper licenses.

A new type of identity theft combining computer hacking and old-fashioned telephone tricks showed up among complaints reported to the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection. A woman received an unsolicited call from a man who said he was a computer security professional and that her computer was infected with a virus.? He then tricked the woman into divulging her password and promised to fix her issue.

"The next day, however, she noticed an unauthorized charge on her credit card and realized that she had allowed an identity thief to gain access to the personal information stored on her computer," the agency reported. ?

Also in New York, the demise of Hollywood Video turned into a headache for many consumers. After the video rental store shut down and filed for bankruptcy, the New York consumer agency received many complaints from consumers who said that Universal Fidelity Corp. -- which is managing the bankruptcy -- was demanding payment for unreturned videos, even though they had returned the videos and owed nothing. The agency says it is resolving complaints through mediation.

US tops Russia, China in women's gym qualifying

LONDON (AP) ? This was not what the Americans expected.

Oh sure, being atop the standings in qualifying in women's gymnastics, that went according to plan. But world champion Jordyn Wieber, a heavy favorite to add the Olympic gold, won't even get to contend for the all-around title after finishing behind teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. Countries are limited to two gymnasts in the all-around and event finals.

It was a stunner for Wieber, who had lost only two all-around competitions since 2008 ? though both to fellow Americans ? and it left her teammates reeling.

"I was really surprised, and I feel awful because she wanted it so bad," said Raisman, Wieber's closest friend on the team and the one who knocked her out of the all-around. "But she should still feel proud because she's an Olympian. We have to stay calm and focused on team finals."

The 17-year-old Wieber was sobbing as she made her way through the mixed zone, so distraught she couldn't speak to reporters. A quote attributed to her and distributed by the London Games' internal news agency said: "It is a bit of a disappointment. It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics."

The Americans finished with 181.863 points, even with a weak finish on floor exercise. That was enough to hold off Russia, which is 1.4 points behind after scoring 180.429. Defending Olympic champion China is a distant third with 176.637 points.

European champion Romania is still to come.

The team final is Tuesday.

"That's what I told her, she's going to handle this with as much class as she handled the victories. Make no excuses," said John Geddert, the U.S. coach and Wieber's personal coach. "The job's not done yet. Team USA has got a big day on Tuesday."

The Americans have come into the last two Olympics as world champions, only to leave without gold. But this team is stronger, top to bottom, than the 2004 and even 2008 squads, and has a swagger LeBron and his buddies would appreciate. That starts with Wieber, who is normally as steady and reliable as a metronome.

If anyone was going to avoid the 16-year curse of world champions going without Olympic gold, it was going to be her.

But she's appeared vulnerable these last few months while Raisman and Douglas have been on the rise.

Wieber stepped slightly out of bounds on vault, had a form break on a handstand on uneven bars and a few wobbles on balance beam. But it was floor exercise that really cost her. She got too much power on one of her tumbling passes and had to steady herself with a step back ? and out of bounds. The deduction left her on the all-around bubble with Raisman, the world bronze medalist on floor, still waiting her turn.

Raisman needed less than a 15 to knock Wieber down to third place, and she got that easily ? and then some. She gets such great height on her tumbling passes that you could park a Mini Cooper beneath her; and she lands them with such pinpoint accuracy you want to check her feet for glue.

She finished with a score of 15.325, bumping out Wieber. Raisman is second in the all-around standings behind Russia's Viktoria Komova, with Douglas third.

How this will impact the squad could be an even bigger concern than any other country. The Americans are a tight-knit bunch ? Wieber, Raisman and McKayla Maroney talk or message each other every day ? and such a shock to their traditional order has the potential to threaten that chemistry.

"We will deal with that. We will try to help her as much as possible," national team coordinator Martha Karolyi said. "I would be very disappointed, too. She is reigning world champion, also US champion. Today she wasn't quite as sharp. She was very good but not quite as sharp and the other two girls surpassed her. So we will give her all the support. I think she gave a very nice effort, no major errors. What can you do? Sport is sport."

If they can regroup, the world champions showed they have the goods to win only their second Olympic title, and first since the Magnificent Seven in 1996.

All four of the Americans do Amanars, one of the toughest vaults in the world ? a roundoff onto the takeoff board, back handspring onto the table and 2.5 twisting somersaults before landing. It's got a start value ? the measure of difficulty ? of 6.5, a whopping 0.7 above the vault most other gymnasts will do, and it gives the USA a massive advantage after just one event.

Even worse for rivals, the Americans make those vaults look easy. Douglas' toes were so pointed in the air she looked like a directional arrow while McKayla Maroney's legs were ruler straight. Each American took a hop on their landing, but it was a minor deduction and the U.S. left the event with a score of 47.633.

Compare that to the Russians. Despite Komova and Maria Paseka doing Amanars, Russia still gave up 1.3 points on that one event.

The Russians are far better on uneven bars, but the Americans stayed close thanks to Douglas and Kyla Ross. Ross, who missed last year's world championships because she was too young, now flits between bars like a hummingbird, weightless and graceful. Douglas, dubbed "The Flying Squirrel" by Karolyi because of her release moves, wowed the crowd by flipping so high above the bar she could have changed the overhead lights.

Her feet slammed into the mat on her dismount, and delighted coach Liang Chow sprinted around the end of the podium, pumping his fist.

Douglas scored a 15.333, and the Americans were cruising.

Raisman may not have Douglas' elegance or magnetic smile, but she is steady and solid. She scored a 15.1 or better on all but one event Sunday, and is in the running to make finals on both floor and balance beam.

"Aly had the meet of her life today," Geddert said. "What a time to have it. I couldn't be happier for her. She's a great kid. She deserves it. It's a great thing for her."

Kristen Stewart Penning Apology to Liberty Ross, Source Says

Kristen Stewart has already apologized to the public for her makeout session with Rupert Sanders, much to the consternation and horror of Robert Pattinson.

Now, an insider tells Radar Online, the actress is prepared to address Sanders' wife directly. She is apparently writing a note to Liberty Ross.

"Kristen didn’t feel it was appropriate to issue a public apology to Liberty once the story of her affair with Rupert broke," the source says. “Instead, she’s going to do the decent thing and write Liberty a private letter expressing her deepest regret for her actions."

The mole goes on to say that Stewart only wanted to mention Pattinson in her initial statement because she's "desperate to save" that relationship.

But she feels "awful" for getting in between a man, a wife and his two children.

For whatever it's worth to either Ross or Pattinson, a reliable website claims Stewart and Sanders did NOT have sex.
