CHICAGO (AP) ? A judge decided against declaring a mistrial in Drew Peterson's murder case Thursday, saying the former police officer still can get a fair trial despite prosecutors' missteps.

The ruling by Judge Edward Burmila followed several blunders by prosecutors, who are seeking to prove the 58-year-old Peterson killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. He also is a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, but has never been charged in her case.

A furious Burmila admonished prosecutors Wednesday after the second witness in just their second day of testimony began talking about finding a .38-caliber bullet on his driveway. Thomas Pontarelli, a former neighbor of Savio's, hinted in his testimony that Peterson may have planted it there to intimidate him.

Prosecutors later admitted under tough questioning by the judge that there was no evidence to support the claim. And Burmila wondered aloud about whether the testimony made Peterson appear menacing in jurors' eyes and undermined his ability to get a fair trial.

But after heated arguments by both sides Thursday morning, Burmila told attorneys that "the court believes that the defendant's ability to receive a fair trial is not extinguished at this time."

LONDON (AP) ? Michael Phelps won the 200-meter individual medley Thursday for his first individual gold of the London Games, becoming the first man to win the same indvidual event in three straight Olympics.

Phelps, who won the 4x200 relay earlier, clocked 1 minute, 54.27 seconds in the 200 IM for his record 20th career Olympic medal and 16th gold. He had failed to complete a threepeat in two previous events, the 200 fly and the 400 IM.

American Teammate Ryan Lochte touched in 1:54.90 to take the silver medal and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary was third in 1:56.22.

India bans edible oil exports in branded consumer packs

NEW DELHI, Aug 1 (Reuters) - India has banned exports of

edible oil in branded consumer packs -- popular with

ex-patriates -- in a largely symbolic move to rein in cooking

oil prices in the domestic market, given quantities are very

small.

Such exports had previously been permitted until Sep. 30,

2012, in branded packs of up to 5 kilogrammes, subject to a

limit of 10,000 tonnes.

"Export of edible oils in branded consumer packs has been

prohibited," a commerce ministry statement said.

"It doesn't make sense to ban such a meagre quantity at a

time when the country imports about 9 million tonnes in a year,"

said B.V. Mehta, executive director of the Mumbai-based trade

quantities of groundnut, sunflower and rapeseed oils to cater to

expatriate demand.

Historic Phelps claims record 19th medal

Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time, winning a record 19th medal in the pool as China's swimming sensation Ye Shiwen grabbed her second gold of the Games.

Phelps anchored the US team to a resounding victory in the 4x200m freestyle relay to secure gold and beat the record of 18 medals amassed by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina between 1956 and 1964.

The American had earlier been thwarted in his bid for a 200m butterfly Olympic treble by Chad le Clos of South Africa, but a silver medal allowed him to match the record medal haul before the relay sealed his place in history.

Phelps, 27, won six golds and two bronze medals at the 2004 Athens Games, then collected a record eight golds in Beijing.

He had suffered a testing start to the London Games, slumping out of the medals in the 400m individual medley and then having to settle for silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

But Phelps' unprecedented 19th medal was never in doubt in Tuesday's relay as he took over the final leg with a clear lead built up by his team-mates and powered home to leave France trailing in silver and China with bronze.

"I thanked those guys for helping me get to this moment," said Phelps. "I told those guys I wanted a big lead in the last leg and they gave it to me.

"I just wanted to hold on."

Ye, just 16, may encounter more speculation about her remarkable performances after she added the 200m individual medley title to the 400m individual medley crown.

The Chinese girl was lagging behind the leaders at the turn in the Aquatics Centre, but produced a powerful final 50m to overhaul Alicia Coutts of Australia in an Olympic record time of 2min 7.57sec.

Her swim came just days after her lightning freestyle leg in the longer medley propelled her to a new world record.

Ye's feats have raised unproven suspicions of doping, with John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches' Association, describing her finish in the 400m medley as "impossible".

But Ye said she had used the row to motivate herself.

"I don't feel upset or sad about what the media have been saying about me," she insisted. "I feel calm, but it just encouraged me to prove myself."

Chinese authorities went on the offensive over the allegations. Jiang Zhixue, the head of anti-doping at China's General Administration of Sport, told Xinhua news agency it was unfair to point the finger at their swimmers.

"I think it is not proper to single Chinese swimmers out once they produce good results. Some people are just biased," he said.

Former British swimmer Adrian Moorhouse, a gold medallist in the 100m breaststroke in the 1988 Seoul Games, defended Ye, saying it was possible China had unearthed their own Phelps.

"I think it's sour grapes," Moorhouse said. "I think it's quite insulting actually."

In the gymnastics arena, the United States won the women's team final to claim their first gold medal in the event since 1996. Russia had to settle for silver while Romania pipped 2008 Olympic champions China to bronze.

Defending champions Germany won the equestrian three-day eventing, with Michael Jung then becoming the first rider to hold the European, world and Olympic individual titles.

Great Britain finished second in the team event to earn a silver medal for Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter Zara Phillips, but the host nation is still without a single gold medal after four days of competition.

The US basketball Dream Team thrashed Tunisia 110-63 as Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love each scored 16 points, leaving the Americans heading for a date with Nigeria and eyeing the next round.

China lead the United States by 13 golds to nine in the medals table, and the Chinese won their third diving title in three events when world champions Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao clinched the women's 10m synchro platform.

Chen, the individual 10m platform champion from the Beijing Games and the synchronised 10m platform champion, teamed with Wang to tally 368.40 points from their five dives off the tower.

Curiosity rover on track for early August landing on Mars

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? Eight days before reaching Mars, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft performed a flight-path adjustment scheduled more than nine months ago.

The trajectory correction maneuver completed late Saturday may be the last one the mission needs before landing day, though two further opportunities remain on its schedule in case they are needed.

The spacecraft is on course for delivering the mission's car-size rover, Curiosity, to a landing target beside a Martian mountain at about 10:31 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5. (1:31 a.m. on Aug. 6, EDT). After landing, the rover will spend a two-year prime mission studying whether the area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for life.

The spacecraft used two brief thruster firings totaling about six seconds to adjust its trajectory at about 10 p.m. PDT on July 28 (1 a.m. on July 29, EDT). This maneuver had been on the mission's schedule since before launch on Nov. 26, 2011. It altered the flight path less than any of the spacecraft's three previous trajectory correction maneuvers on the way from Earth to Mars.

The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft had been on a course in recent weeks that would have hit a point at the top of the Martian atmosphere about 13 miles (21 kilometers) east of the target entry point. On landing day, it can steer enough during its flight through the upper atmosphere to correct for missing the target entry point by a few miles and still land on the intended patch of Mars real estate. The mission's engineers and managers rated the projected 13-mile miss big enough to warrant a correction maneuver.

"The purpose of this maneuver is to move the point at which Curiosity enters the atmosphere by about 13 miles," said Tomas Martin-Mur of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., chief of the mission's navigation team. "The first look at telemetry and tracking data afterwards indicates the maneuver succeeded as planned."

The thruster firings altered the spacecraft's velocity by about one-fortieth of one mile per hour (one centimeter per second). Curiosity will enter Mars' atmosphere at a speed of about 13,200 mph (5,900 meters per second).

Opportunities for two further course corrections are scheduled in the final 48 hours before landing, if needed.

"I will not be surprised if this was our last trajectory correction maneuver," Martin Mur said of Saturday's event. "We will be monitoring the trajectory using the antennas of the Deep Space Network to be sure Curiosity is staying on the right path for a successful entry, descent and landing."

Descent from the top of Mars' atmosphere to the surface will employ bold techniques enabling use of a smaller target area and heavier landed payload than were possible for any previous Mars mission. These innovations, if successful, will place a well-equipped mobile laboratory into a locale especially well-suited for its mission of discovery. The same innovations advance NASA toward capabilities needed for human missions to Mars.

As of July 30, the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft carrying the rover Curiosity will have traveled about 343 million miles (555 million kilometers) of its 352-million-mile (567-million-kilometer) flight to Mars.
