MacNN | iPhone News: Chinese activist at NYU finds iPhone, iPad laced with monitoring apps

?

Blame placed on Chinese government, wife of activist Bob Fu

An iPhone and an iPad given to Chinese political dissident Chen Guangcheng had spyware preloaded, Reuters sources claim. Chen is famous for escaping house arrest in China and taking refuge in the US embassy in Beijing. The activist eventually arrived at New York University Law School on a fellowship; the spyware, which would've let the Chinese government track Chen's position and monitor his communications, was reportedly found through a screening by NYU technicians. The iPad was eventually scrubbed and returned to Chen at his request, one source says.

Some blame is being placed on Heidi Cai, who gave the devices to Chen as a gift in May 2012, after he and his family had moved into a New York apartment. Cai is the wife of Chinese activist Bob Fu, who runs a Christian group called ChinaAid, which helps underground churches in China as well as victims of forced abortions. Fu is calling the accusations "ridiculous," and "like a 007 thing." He states that he and Cai simply thought that Chen's family would want to call their relatives, and decided to give them communication options. He adds that a ChinaAid computer technician tells him "the only thing he added on the iPad was a Skype account."

A media consultant who has been helping Chen, Mark Corallo, says that the iPhone and iPad were "brand-new when ChinaAid gave them to NYU to give to Chen, so there was no need or reason to perform any check." He comments that "At least to Chen's knowledge, none of these devices was ever found to have any tracking or listening mechanisms." Reuters sources argue that Chen was told within days of his coming to the US that some of his supporters might actually be spying on him. Chen was "furious" and "very upset" when he heard this, one of the sources remarks. The activist is, however, said to have continued to associate with the Fu family.

Chen's fellowship was recently ended. He accuses NYU of bending to pressure from the Chinese government, and some of his supporters charge that the university is afraid of offending China while still aiming to build a campus in Shanghai. NYU insists that the fellowship was only ever intended to last one year.

Senate immigration bill a ?pipe dream?

Illinois Republican Rep. Peter Roskam (Alex Wong/Getty Images)

The Senate is poised to pass a comprehensive immigration bill this week. Immigration reform proponents will cheer! Immigrant activists will cry tears of joy! DREAMers will dream bigger dreams!

Not to be a heartbreaker, but this party probably won't last long.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives hasn't the slightest intention of passing the thing as a whole, says Illinois Republican Rep. Peter Roskam, a lawmaker responsible for counting Republican votes.

Roskam, who serves as the Republican chief deputy whip, made it clear on Thursday that House leaders do not plan to put the complete Senate bill to a vote on the floor of the lower chamber. Even if they did, it likely wouldn't pass.

?The House has no capacity to move that bill in its entirety. It just won?t happen," Roskam said during a meeting with reporters on Thursday morning. "It is a pipe dream to think that that bill is going to go to the floor and be voted on. The House is going to move through in a more deliberative process.?

While Senate members have agreed to take a comprehensive approach on the legislation?their bill would provide a pathway to legality for unauthorized immigrants and to spend billions on border security?House lawmakers intend to pass the bill in pieces, starting with a bill that shores up border security and then (maybe) another measure that deals with the 11 million people currently living in the United States illegally.

But that approach won't fly with Senate Democrats or President Barack Obama, who say they won't accept an immigration bill that doesn't have a pathway to legal status baked into the cake. Some might call it an impasse, a term more commonly referred to as just another day in Washington.

Unlike their counterparts in the Senate, who have taken steps to pass the bill quickly, the House is in no rush to act.

In one important way, the roles between the two chambers are reversed. There is a long-standing Washington tradition in which the House passes bills and the Senate ceremonially (and proudly) ignores them. This time, the House is the saucer that will cool the Senate's tea. Or, to put it another way, House Republicans want to slow-jam the immigration bill; Senate Democrats are thinking more Busta Rhymes.

For the moment, the House seems to be enjoying the role-reversal. Some aren't even reading the Senate version at all.

?I have not gone through chapter and verse on the Senate bill," Roskam said. "I don?t think I?m going to be voting on the Senate bill, so it?s not as if I?m marinating in study.?

BlackBerry still promising BBM for iOS before the end of the summer

We're still getting asked this all the time, so just in case you were wondering, BBM ? aka BlackBerry Messenger ? is still coming to iOS, and it'll be with us by the end of the summer. BlackBerry CEO, Thorsten Heins, used this mornings earnings call to let us know, but didn't provide any other, more specific details. And, since we're only just at the beginning of summer, it's not likely its just around the corner. Ah, well. Who's waiting, oh so patiently, for BBM?

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Cuomo subpoena's landlord ...

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced yesterday (Tuesday) that his newly-formed Tenant Protection Unit (TPU) had served a subpoena on Castellan Real Estate Partners/Liberty Place Property Management.

The subpoena surrounds allegations that the owner and manager of some 1,700 apartments in Harlem, the Bronx and Washington Heights intimidated Spanish immigrant tenants in buildings it bought last year.

?Landlords who harass tenants and engage in prejudiced bullying will not get away with it in this state, period,? Governor Cuomo said. ?We created the Tenant Protection Unit for exactly this purpose: to stand up for renters who are being taken advantage of by bad landlords.

?This investigation sends a clear message to any owner who tries to profit by preying on those who do not speak English or push tenants out of their homes with threats.?

The investigation was launched following allegations that Castellan told the mostly Mexican and Ecuadorian tenants they?d have to leave their homes unless the showed proof of citizenship and pay stubs.

Tenants also detailed being pressured to accept inadequate buyouts to leave their rent-regulated homes and waive their rights through an English-only settlement document ? given to tenants who cannot read English.

In addition to requesting the relevant rental documents, the subpoena also requests information on the landlords? business and investment practices based on their reported promises to investors of 15% profit returns through the purchase of rent-regulated buildings that they had described to investors as having been previously ?mismanaged.?

However, Liberty Place Property Management told Real Estate Weekly that despite the allegations, results of an investigation would exonerate them.

?We were totally blind-sided, by the subpoena?and received no prior notice,? said Rick Serrapica, the chief operating officer of Liberty Place. ?We are going to evaluate it and we will respond, of course. There was absolutely no wrongdoing here what so ever. We are confident that after the review process is completed it will be found that we did nothing wrong.?

Real Estate Weekly was unable to secure comment from Castellan by press time but the company was founded in 2006 by John B. Salib and his brother Paul.

John had worked for Landmark Advisors and Solomon Brothers before starting his investment company.?Paul was at Redstone Equity Partners from 2004-2006.

Sony's unannounced Reader PRS-T3 leaks out at the FCC

Image

Last summer, Sony's PRS-T2 e-reader was leaked when it visited the FCC, and was available for pre-order a week ahead of its official launch. Therefore, it's with a sense of deja-vu that we tell you that Sony's annual update, the PRS-T3, has now passed through the FCC's hallowed halls and been deemed fit for human consumption. There's not much we can glean from the documents, except to say that it's got a 3.6Wh battery, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and will probably be available in stores about a month or two from now.

Samsung ATIV Tab 3 hands-on (video)

Samsung ATIV Tab 3 handson

Well, we're no closer to finding out whether or not this is indeed the world's thinnest Windows 8 tablet, but we can confirm that the ATIV Tab 3 is stunningly thin. In fact, it's as svelte as its iOS and Android competitors, hitting an astounding 8.22mm. Samsung's following the design lines of its Galaxy range -- aside from the Windows button beneath the screen, obviously. At a distance you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the ATIV Tab 3 and recent Galaxy Tabs. We like the unified approach here -- it should make it much easier to identify a Samsung device at first glance. Of course, that uniformity also means that the devices all feel similar too. That is to say, cheap and plasticky.

With an Intel Atom processor inside along with 2GB of RAM, It feels light and responsive. Apps launched pretty quickly, but we weren't able to really punish the CPU and unreliable WiFi made testing the browser impossible. The 1,366 x 768, 10.1-inch screen pairs with an S-Pen that's housed in the bottom right corner, which isn't quite as useful as it is on the Note range... at least not yet. The don't-call-it-a-stylus comes with dedicated software, including improved handwriting-to-text, Easy Clipping and Air View all now working within Windows 8, not to mention S Note. The ATIV Tab 3 will be shipping in early August for $699, with a keyboard cover included. For now, we've got more impressions after the break.

With $1M In Funding, Bunch Aims To Be The Center Of Your In-Depth, Topic-Based Discussions

bunch logoThe Internet isn't lacking for sites and services where people can post their comments and thoughts, but Andrew Sider, co-founder and CEO of a startup called Bunch, argues that there's still something missing: "How do we connect with people, not around friends, not around social networks, but around a topic that they care about deeply?" After all, Sider said that many of your Facebook friends and Twitter followers probably aren't passionate about the same things that you are. He acknowledged that online forums have filled this role in the past, but he said those forums forums are now intimidating to casual users and also kind of uncool. (Other attempts at reinventing the forum include a new startup called Discourse.)

Surprising Trove of Gas Seeps Found Off East Coast

On the seafloor just off of the U.S. East Coast lies a barely known world, explorations of which bring continual surprises. As recently as the mid-2000s, practically zero methane seeps ? spots on the seafloor where gas leaks from the Earth's crust ? were thought to exist off the East Coast; while one had been reported more than a decade ago, it was thought to be one of a kind. ??

?But in the past two years, additional studies have revealed a host of new areas of seafloor rich in seeps, said Laura Brothers, a research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey. And surrounding these seafloor vents, scientists have found a variety of unique life forms, like mussels and crabs, that survive via symbiotic relationships with methane-eating bacteria, Brothers told LiveScience's OurAmazingPlanet. New technologies have allowed scientists to keep locating new seeps, including one that may be the largest in the world. The findings have changed geologists' understanding of the processes taking place beneath the seafloor.

"These newly discovered [seafloor] communities show that there is much more seafloor methane venting then we previously thought, and suggests that there are many more seeps out there that we don't know about," Brothers said.

A study co-authored by Brothers, published online last month in the journal Geology, found several large communities of mussels and other animals at two spots off of the Carolinas where methane is seeping from the seafloor, Brothers said. Although one of these spots had already been discovered, the amount of life the researchers found covered an area about six times larger than previously thought, Brothers said. And the mussels cover a total area equivalent to about 40 football fields.[Photos: Unique Life Found at East Coast Gas Seep]

"We found these in an area we thought we knew well," she said.

The largest seep in the Atlantic

An even larger, previously unknown vent was found off the coast of Virginia, in research by Steve Ross, a scientist at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Sandra Brooke, a scientist at Florida State University. Discovered near the Norfolk submarine canyon, the vent is the largest in the Atlantic, and possibly in all of the world's oceans, Ross told LiveScience.

North America's continental shelf, the underwater edge of the continent that borders the Atlantic Ocean basin, is littered with underwater canyons etched by rivers thousands of years ago when the region was above sea level. These canyons remain little explored, Ross said. But he is helping to change that through his work aboard the Okeanos Explorer, a ship owned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which for the last three years has been working to explore these submarine canyons.

Scientists locate the seeps by producing images of methane gas bubbles (and where they originate) using multi-beam sonar, which calculates the amount of time and distance it takes for sound waves to travel from the ship to the bubbles and back. The same technique also produces detailed imagery of the seafloor. Remote-operated vehicles can then be dispatched to bring back photos of the ocean bottom, Ross said. All of these techniques are being used to document the gas seeps, he said.

Many more to be discovered

Further imaging of the seafloor by the Okeanos Explorer last fall revealed another three gas seeps southeast of Nantucket, Mass., at a maximum depth of 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) below the ocean surface. Along with several new findings that haven't been published yet, these newfound seeps add up to a total of about eight regions venting methane off of the East Coast, Ross said.

However, Carolyn Ruppel, a researcher at the USGS, advised against declaring a specific number of seeps found, since this total is constantly increasing and since the determination of what constitutes an individual "seep" can be vague. "We expect many more to be discovered," Ruppel said.

Much of this methane appears to be coming from methane gas hydrates, a crystallized form of methane stored in frigid sediment under the relatively high pressures of the deep ocean, Brothers said. Previously it wasn't thought that a significant amount of this methane would be released from these deposits, which only give up their methane when weakened by lower pressures or rising temperatures. It's unclear why some of these hydrates are producing methane gas, but it's not a huge amount and unlikely to be enough to currently attract commercial interest, Brothers said.

Palace sheds some light on Kate's baby plans

LONDON (AP) ? With Prince William and the former Kate Middleton expecting their first child in mid-July ? and much of the world interested in the birth of a future monarch ? officials at Clarence House have released some of the couple's plans, although many details are still being kept private. Kate has made several public appearances recently but is expected to keep a low profile in the final weeks of her pregnancy. Here is the latest news about the infant who will, upon entering the world, be third in line for the British throne.

KING OR QUEEN?

Royal officials can't say ? and it's not because they are being coy, it's because Kate and William have not found out ? and don't plan to.

"They don't know the sex of the baby and have decided not to find out," said a royal official who spoke on condition of anonymity under Palace guidelines for distributing information to the press.

PACING THE HALLWAY OR IN THE ROOM WITH HIS WIFE?

Officials said William "fully intends to be present at the birth." The birth is expected to take place at the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's hospital in central London. That is the hospital where William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, were born.

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

A spokesman said the medical team will be led by royal gynecologist Dr. Marcus Setchell.

WILL THE PUBLIC KNOW WHEN KATE IS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL?

Officials said there will be no advance notice. The public will be told once she has settled in her room in the early stages of labor, the spokesman said, anticipating that this would be within an hour of her arrival at the hospital.

HOW WILL PEOPLE FIND OUT THAT AN HEIR TO THE THRONE HAS BEEN BORN?

This will be a mix of tradition and new social media. Officials said a royal aide will emerge from the hospital with a signed bulletin on foolscap-sized paper carrying the Buckingham Palace letterhead. The bulletin will be given to an official who will be driven to the Palace, where it will be posted on an easel in public view in front of the building. At the same time the bulletin is posted, there will be an announcement on Twitter and the media will be formally notified. The document will give the baby's gender, weight and time of birth.

AND THE NAME?

Not so fast. Officials said they don't know how quickly a name will be chosen. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced.

VISITING HOURS?

Officials said royals and members of the Middleton family are likely to visit, but Queen Elizabeth II is not expected to visit at the hospital because she will be on her summer vacation at the Balmoral estate in Scotland.

Underwater springs reveal how coral reefs respond to ocean acidification

June 17, 2013 ? Ocean acidification due to rising carbon dioxide levels will reduce the density of coral skeletons, making coral reefs more vulnerable to disruption and erosion, according to a new study of corals growing where submarine springs naturally lower the pH of seawater.

The study, led by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), is the first to show that corals are not able to fully acclimate to low pH conditions in nature.

"People have seen similar effects in laboratory experiments," said coauthor Adina Paytan, a research scientist in the Institute of Marine Sciences at UC Santa Cruz. "We looked in places where the corals are exposed to low pH for their entire life span. The good news is that they don't just die. They are able to grow and calcify, but they are not producing robust structures."

With atmospheric carbon dioxide rising steadily, the oceans are absorbing more carbon dioxide, which lowers the pH of the surface waters. Ocean acidification refers to changes in seawater chemistry that move it closer to the acidic range of the pH scale, although seawater is not expected to become literally acidic. Paytan's team studied coral reefs along the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula where submarine springs lower the pH of the surrounding seawater in a localized, natural setting. The effect is similar to the widespread ocean acidification that is occurring as the oceans absorb increasing amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Led by first author Elizabeth Crook, a graduate student in Paytan's lab, the researchers deployed instruments to monitor seawater chemistry around the springs and removed skeletal cores from colonies of Porites astreoides, an important Caribbean reef-building coral. They performed CT scans of the core samples to measure their densities and determine annual calcification rates in the laboratory of coauthor Anne Cohen at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The results showed that coral calcification rates decrease significantly along a natural gradient in seawater pH. Ocean acidification lowers the concentration of carbonate ions in seawater, making it more difficult for corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons.

"Carbonate ions are the building blocks they need to grow their skeletons. When the pH is lower the corals have to use more energy to accumulate these carbonate building blocks internally. As a result, the calcification rate is lower and they lay down less dense skeletons," Paytan said.

The reduced density of the coral skeletons makes them more vulnerable to mechanical erosion during storms, organisms that bore into corals, and parrotfish, which sometimes feed on corals. This could lead to a weakening of the reef framework and subsequent degradation of the complex coral reef ecosystem.

"There are likely to be major shifts in reef species and some loss of coral cover, but if ocean acidification is the only impact there won't be total destruction," Paytan said. "We need to protect corals from other stressors, such as pollution and overfishing. If we can control those, the impact of ocean acidification might not be as bad."

Klum ranks 'AGT' judges from 'goofy' to Stern

TV

As one of the new judges on "America's Got Talent," Heidi Klum has been extra busy this season. In addition to reviewing the talent on stage, she's also been assessing the talents of her fellow panelists.

How do they rank? Klum revealed her thoughts on Howie Mandel, Mel B and Howard Stern during a Monday morning visit to TODAY.

As for Mandel, she considers him the lovable, laughable "goofy" one of the bunch, and that's had an unexpected impact on how she evaluates some of the contestants.

"The stuff that comes out of his mouth, he just makes me laugh all the time," she said. "There's a lot of comedians also that try out on 'America's Got Talent,' so I'm always judging them next to him. ? I'm like, 'You're not as good as Howie Mandel.'"

Klum describes her fellow newbie judge Mel B as "strict but fair." And Stern? Well, he's living up to his name.

"But he's also right in what he says," she insisted. "I do like him a lot. He's very much a lamb behind the scenes but when the red light is on and they're recording, then he gets quite stern."

Since joining the show, Klum's found herself being a bit tough too -- even with the youngest contestants.

"A kid comes on to the stage, and I'm always rooting them," she explained. "I always hope that they're going to be good, especially when they sing and they're off. I'm like, 'Oh no! Now it's going to be my turn, and I'm going to have to tell the kids truth.' I feel like I have to though. I'm a judge, and I can't say, 'You sounded amazing,' if they didn't."

See what Klum -- and the rest of the panel -- has to say when the next episode of "America's Got Talent" airs Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on NBC.
