BluntDinerz Las Vegas Food and Drink Blog

Day Tripper
BluntDinerz Original Cocktail Recipe (continued)
by Frank Giannantonio
?
My ideas to get some energy on this blog never took hold, but I still find reasons to make original cocktails all the time.
Not too long ago somebody told me about fiverr.com. If you're unfamiliar with fiverr, it is a website for buying and selling small tasks and services. A lot of the tasks and services offered on fiverr didn't exist until fiverr came around.

When I sold a customized cocktail recipe on fiverr after it only being posted 22 hours, I thought to myself, "WTF, I gotta charge 'em for this?" "Is that what I've been doing wrong this whole time?" Our buyer's mind tells us that five bucks is a great value, but if it's free it must be shit.
Now you have to pay for my hand made original cocktails, suckers. Hah! Not really, only if you go to fiverr. Here, the cocktails flow freely for all readers. Ask and you shall receive.

The recent fiverr cocktail clients are from the company who developed the new smash-hit word game app, "Word Off." They wanted something to celebrate their very successful new app. This watermelon cocktail I put together is what they're getting. I'm calling it "Day Tripper" because it's a day time type of cocktail that will either have you trippin' over yourself or over the complexity of it's flavors. The combination of Sake and Cachaca was a first for me, but it worked. The orange Curacao and Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur help the lemon sour keep the drink in line of what you would expect from looking at it, but it's not typical at all. I really hope you try it and let me know what you think. Don't be afraid of the comments graveyard. lvfrankg ONE LOVE > OUR LOVE?

PS There are hundreds of fiverr rip-offs and clones. Tread carefully if you post gigs to a clone site. In my opinion they are not to be trusted. I've had some bad experiences with a couple like fluxii.net and buzzingpeople.com. Fiverr is the original and we all know what the internet eventually does to non-originality.?

Ingredients

1 Small Round Watermelon That Will Stand Up Without Wobbling.
1 Pomegranate.
1 Granny Smith Apple.
4 OZ. of Fresh Lemon Sour.
1 1/2 OZ of Cachaca
1 1/2 OZ of Medium Dry Sake.
1 OZ. of Orange Curacao
1 OZ. of Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
4-6 Dashes of Orange Bitters

Procedure

Remove two inches from the top of the watermelon.

Scoop flesh from watermelon and top.

Push flesh through a fine mesh colander or a food mill, and reserve juice.

Pour juice back into hollowed watermelon and place in freezer.

Remove seeds from pomegranate, (see video at end of post) and dice apple.

Muddle pomegranate seeds, apples, and lemon sour in a mixing glass.

Add all spirits except bitters.

Remove watermelon from freezer.

Shake ingredients in mixing glass with a lot of ice until? well chilled.

Double strain into watermelon and give it a good stir.

Sprinkle bitters on top.

Serve and enjoy.

Roof Deck Education For Tacoma, WA | Chase NW Construction

When it comes to the protection of your home and family you cannot ignore what?s going on under your roof in the attic. It?s often said out of site, out of mind, and that is often the approach that many take when it comes to their attic and roof. As roofing contractors in servicing Tacoma, Puyallup and surrounding areas, we feel it?s a serious responsibility to educate our customers and communities concerning the dangers of attic mold.
Attic mold is a subtle source of health issues all across America. Living in the North West where we have a high level of precipitation, attic mold has the perfect conditions to thrive in. If you are a home owner you will want to tune in for these informative articles.

?
In a recent re-roof that took place in the city of Tacoma, our crew off roofing technicians discovered a large quantity of rotten sheathing. This rot is due to roof leak that did not receive proper attention. If its not detected or ignored the water continues over time to damage the roof sheathing, insulation, drywall, paint and spawns dangerous attic molds.

?
As you can see in the photo below we had to tear-off the roofing substrate in order to create a solid roof deck for the new system. This is important for the performance and longevity of the new roofing system. If you are in the Tacoma area and are concerned about what might be lurking in your attic due to a leaky old roof, give us a call, and we inspect it for you. That is why they call us the home improvement hero?s.

Exposing a rotten roof deck due to a prolonged roof leak.

Then and Now: The Descent of Ethics in the Medical Field | Medical ...

I feel blessed to have grown up and become a nurse in the era of TV programs like?Marcus Welby, MD, Ben Casey,?and?Medical Center.?I couldn?t wait to be part of such a noble profession and I proudly recited the ?Florence Nightingale Pledge,? the nursing equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath, at my graduation from a Catholic nursing school in 1969.

Written in 1893 and named in honor of nurse/hero Florence Nightingale, the pledge reads:

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.1

Description: http://www.lifenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/physician2.jpgForty-three years later, I still subscribe to those simple but powerful principles but the healthcare world around me has changed dramatically. On the plus side, I have witnessed the great advances in treating illnesses, pain, etc. However, on the minus side, I have witnessed an increasing rejection of traditional ethics that has turned the world I knew upside-down in so many ways. In 1969, I could never have imagined that the crime of abortion would be declared a constitutional right or that euthanasia in the guise of ?physician assisted suicide? would become legal in any state. And could any of us ever have imagined a time when a US president would try to force even Catholic healthcare institutions into violating their conscience rights?

These changes did not happen overnight and neither were they the result of new scientific discoveries. The tragedy is that this all began with small, deliberate steps.

Contraception and Abortion

In 1965, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) redefined conception from the union of sperm and egg to ?the implantation of a fertilized ovum,?2?allowing hormones ? like those in the Pill ? that can interfere with implantation to be classified as contraceptive rather than potentially abortifacient. Eventually, this opened the door not only to widespread acceptance of artificial contraception but also later developments such as abortifacient ?morning after? pills, embryonic stem cell research, and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Unsurprisingly, abortion itself was legalized a mere eight years after the ACOG redefinition of conception when the stage was already set for a pervasive contraceptive mentality making childbearing merely a ?choice.? Now, we not only have abortion celebrated as a right but also infertile couples who want to adopt having to compete with same-sex couples for a smaller and smaller pool of available children to love and raise. Some desperate infertile couples resort to IVF, artificial insemination, or surrogate motherhood. Today, unborn babies themselves routinely have to pass ?quality control? prenatal tests to escape abortion. And just recently, two parents won almost $3 million in a ?wrongful birth? lawsuit because they claimed that they would have aborted their daughter with Down Syndrome if the prenatal tests had been accurate.3

Moreover, according to two ethicists writing in a recent article in the?Journal of Medical Ethics, even a newborn without disabilities does not necessarily have any right to live. Ethicists Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva baldly state that ?what we call ?after-birth abortion? (killing a newborn) should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled.? This, they argue, should be permissible because, like a fetus, the newborn is only a ?potential person.?4

Organ Donation

In 1968, an ad hoc committee at Harvard Medical School issued a report defining a type of irreversible coma as a new criterion for death,?stating that ?[t]he burden is great on patients who suffer permanent loss of intellect, on their families, on the hospitals, and on those in need of hospital beds already occupied by these comatose patients? and the ?[o]bsolete criteria for the definition of death can lead to controversy in obtaining organs for transplantation.?5

Since then, all 50 states have adopted laws adding brain death to the definition of death but each hospital can determine its own, often widely varying, criteria for what counts as brain death.

When brain death did not provide enough organ donations to transplant, some ethicists and doctors devised a new way of obtaining organs. Now, we have non-heart-beating organ donation (aka donation after cardiac death) for people who do not meet the brain death definition6?and doctors like Robert Truog, who argues that the traditional ?dead donor rule? before organ transplantation should be eliminated in favor of?taking organs from living patients on life support with ?valid consent for both withdrawing treatment and organ donation.?7

In a final step, doctors in Belgium have already combined euthanasia with organ donation.8?Could this happen here? Just last year, the?New York Times?published an article from a death row inmate in Oregon arguing for the right to donate his organs after his own capital punishment by lethal injection, and started an organization promoting this for other prisoners.9

The ?Right To Die? and Euthanasia

The 1970s brought the invention of ?living wills? and the?Euthanasia Society of America changed its name to the Society for the Right to Die. The so-called ?right to die? movement received a real boost when the parents of Karen Quinlan, a 21-year-old woman considered ?vegetative? after a probable drug overdose, ?won? the right to remove her ventilator with the support of many prominent Catholic theologians. Karen continued to live 10 more years with a feeding tube, much to the surprise and dismay of some ethicists. Shortly after the Quinlan case, California passed the first ?living will? law.

Originally, ?living wills? only covered refusal of life-sustaining treatment for imminently dying people. There was some suspicion about this allegedly innocuous document and, here in Missouri, ?living will? legislation only passed when ?right to die? advocates agreed to a provision exempting food and water from the kinds of treatment to be refused.

But, it wasn?t long before the parents of Missouri?s Nancy Cruzan, who was also said to be in a ?vegetative? state, ?won? the right to withdraw her feeding tube despite her not being terminally ill or even having a ?living will.? The case was appealed to the US Supreme Court, which upheld Missouri law requiring ?clear and convincing evidence? that Nancy Cruzan would want her feeding tube removed, but, in the end, a local judge allowed the feeding tube to be removed. Shortly after Nancy?s slow death from dehydration, Senators John Danforth and Patrick Moynihan proposed the Patient Self-Determination Act (never voted upon but became law under budget reconciliation), which required all institutions to offer all patients information on ?living wills? and other advance directives. Since then, such directives evolved to include not only the so-called ?vegetative? state and feeding tubes but virtually any other condition a person specifies as worse than death and any medical care considered life-sustaining when that person is deemed unable to communicate.

But has this choice become an illusion? The last several years have also seen the rise of so-called futility policies and even futility laws in Texas that can override patient or family decisions to continue treatment on the basis that doctors and/or ethicists know best.

CLICK LIKE IF YOU?RE PRO-LIFE!

?

In the early 1990s, Jack Kevorkian went public with his first assisted suicide and the ?right to die? debate took yet another direction. By the end of the decade, Oregon became the first state to allow physician-assisted suicide. At first, the law was portrayed as necessary for terminally ill people with allegedly unrelievable pain. Within a short time, though, it was reported that ?according to their physicians, the patients requested assistance with suicide because of concern about loss of autonomy and control of bodily functions, not because of concern about inadequate control of pain or financial loss.?10

In 2008, Washington became the next state to legalize assisted suicide and in 2009, Montana?s state Supreme Court declared that it was not against public policy for a doctor to assist the suicide of a competent terminally ill person. Relentless efforts to legalize assisted suicide in other states have failed so far, but many euthanasia proponents support terminal sedation as a stopgap alternative to assisted suicide for the present.11?Ominously, just last year assisted suicide activist and terminal sedation advocate Dr. Timothy Quill was named president-elect of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).

In just the last few months,?popular health expert Dr. Mehmet Oz voiced his support for physician-assisted suicide on his TV show and Dr. Phil McGraw hosted a segment on his widely seen TV show featuring a Canadian woman who wanted her adult disabled children to die by lethal injection. Ironically, the mother, along with former Kevorkian lawyer Geoffrey Feiger, argued that removing their feeding tubes was an ?inhumane? way to end the lives of the adult children. Tragically, when the studio audience was polled, 90% were in favor of lethal injections for the disabled adults.

The Challenge Ahead

After 43 years, I don?t miss the starched nursing uniforms and glass IV bottles of my youth but I certainly do miss the idealism and ethical unity that I shared with my colleagues during that time.

Back then, Catholic nursing education like mine added a level of ministry to our efforts but, Catholic or not, we all shared the common goal of providing the very best health care for every patient regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or condition.

But now, in capitulation to the new ideal of ?choice,? we doctors and nurses find ourselves ostracized from our professional organizations for being ?politically incorrect? when we oppose abortion and stand up for discrimination-free medical care for the disabled. We are warned not be ?judgmental? when a terminally ill person asks to die. At the same time, we see our conscience rights being legally dismantled with excuses such as ?Doctors, nurses and pharmacists choose professions that put patients? rights first. If they foresee that priority becoming problematic for them, they should choose another profession.?12

This did not happen overnight but rather by small and ever deepening steps. The result has not been a more compassionate and just society but rather a culture with a false sense of power and entitlement. We have been seduced into believing not only that we deserve control over having or not having children but also the degree of perfection of those chosen children. We think we deserve a life in which the seriously ill or disabled don?t financially or emotionally burden us. We think we deserve to decide when our own lives are not worth living, and have a right to be painlessly dispatched by a medical person. And we desperately but ultimately futilely want to believe that our actions and attitudes will not have terrible consequences.

It will take all of us openly and constantly challenging this culture of death to restore the traditional respect for life that protects all our lives.

Study: One in 10 U.S. Veterans Has No Health Insurance - New ...

One in 10 veterans under the age of 65 is currently living without health insurance and reports not using Veterans Affairs (VA) health care, according to a new study examining health care access for retired service members.

The report, which also found a high number of veterans? family members living without insurance, notes such rates are highest in states that have made little progress in implementing provisions of the Affordable Care Act. These states account for 40 percent of uninsured veterans.

Despite having higher rates of health insurance than the general population, ?an estimated 1.3 million veterans lack health insurance coverage and do not use VA health care,? noted the study?s co-author, Genevieve Kenney, who points out a majority of uninsured veterans tend to be younger and less well educated.

The study, released Thursday by the non-partisan Urban Institute, comes as the nation awaits a Supreme Court decision on the fate of the ACA. A ruling is expected in June.

If upheld, about 630,000 uninsured veterans under the age of 65 would likely qualify for Medicaid, the state and federal health insurance program for the poor, which would be expanded under the law. Under current law, just one in 10 qualifies for the program.

Another 520,000 uninsured vets would be eligible for subsidized health coverage in new marketplaces, or insurance exchanges, mandated under the ACA. This would also benefit close to 80 percent of the nearly one million family members of uninsured vets.

There are currently around 13 million veterans between the ages of 19 and 64 living in the United States. Some 17 percent of those without insurance report suffering from service-related disabilities or functional limitations, while 41 percent say they have unmet medical needs. Another 34 percent say they have delayed care due to cost, the report notes.

With two wars winding down in Afghanistan and Iraq, the findings also showed that one in four uninsured veterans served between September 2001 and 2010.

The report is the first to examine rates of health insurance among veterans on both the national and state level. There are several states with more than 14 percent uninsured ? Louisiana, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. On average, uninsurance is higher among those that have ?taken only limited steps toward implementing exchanges under the ACA,? according to the report.

Texas and California are each home to more than 100,000 uninsured vets, the study found.

While the authors of the report say more aggressive implementation of the ACA would help ameliorate the problem, J.P. Tremblay, spokesperson for the California Department of Veterans Affairs, says the real issue is making sure vets understand the benefits available to them through the VA system.

?Many don?t know,? says Tremblay, who explains that when returning home, soldiers ?get a week of transition services? ? meaning they sit in a class while someone lectures them on accessing benefits. The problem, he says, is that most are only thinking of one thing, and that?s ?getting home.?

Tremblay says the ACA is in many ways modeled after the VA system, which he describes as ?top notch,? adding that all returning vets are guaranteed coverage for the first five years. The challenge, he says, is ?getting into the system.?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other maladies common to service members can take time to manifest, he explains, so many put off registering. When they do experience symptoms, it can exacerbate frustrations of trying to register for the first time.

Reports of lengthy waits and delayed process times for claims have become fairly common since the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Urban Institute report also suggested that proximity to a VA center could be one of the reasons explaining whether or not service members accessed the health care that was available to them. Expanded coverage through the ACA, authors contend, would provide a greater availability of options for veterans and their family members.

They do note, however, that with increased options come problems of fragmented care. Those accessing both VA and non-VA coverage, for example, may need ?targeted assistance? to help them make informed choices that do not disrupt the care they have been receiving.?

With uninsured veterans accounting for roughly 5 percent of the nation?s 47 million people without health insurance, the study concludes, ?more aggressive ACA implementation? will help ensure they get the care they need.

Birds got smart by becoming big babes

Out of the skulls of babes. Modern birds have skulls that look remarkably like those of juvenile dinosaurs, offering an unusual explanation for how birds came to have relatively large brains.

As dinosaurs evolved into birds, something arrested their development. The juvenile heads they kept may be responsible for their relatively high intelligence, and their incredible evolutionary success.

Birds are living dinosaurs, having evolved from feathered dinosaurs similar to the Velociraptor. They were the only dinosaurs to survive the mass extinction that took place 65 million years ago.

Bhart-Anjan Bhullar of Harvard University and colleagues took photos and CT scans of skulls belonging to juvenile and adult dinosaurs, extinct and modern birds, and more distant relatives like crocodiles.

They found that compared to their ancestors, birds' faces became flattened, and their brain cases relatively larger. That's exactly what young dinosaurs' skulls looked like.

"This could be a landmark study," says Gregory Erickson of the Florida State University in Tallahassee. "When you look at a bird you're looking at a young dinosaur."

Like bird like human

This switch to a more juvenile skull shape was also an important force in human evolution. Adult human skulls look much like those of baby chimpanzees, with flattened faces and over-sized brain cases.

In fact, major evolutionary changes often rely on changes to development, because it's relatively easy to change the pace of an animal's development, producing adults that may look very different to their ancestors.

For birds, switching to a more baby-like skull shape eventually unleashed their potential. In particular, having larger skulls relative to their body size allowed birds to evolve relatively large and more elaborate brains.

Bhullar's group is trying to reverse bird evolution, tweaking the genes of chickens to make them revert to their dinosaur ancestors. Last year, his supervisor Arkhat Abzhanov persuaded a chicken embryo to grow a snout rather than a beak. Bhullar says he hasn't yet found the genes underpinning the changes in birds' skulls, but if he does, he could give a chicken the head of a dinosaur.

'Men in Black III' tops 'Avengers' at box office

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in "Men in Black 3."

By Reuters

The third "Men in Black" alien action comedy bumped the mighty "Avengers" from the top of movie box office charts through Sunday and was likely to dominate theaters over the rest of the U.S. Memorial Day weekend.

"MIB 3", starring Will Smith, racked up $55 million in the United States and Canada from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The movie also topped box offices in 104 countries around the world, and is expected to haul in a global $202 million over the four-day holiday weekend, distributor Sony Pictures said.

It is the first "Men in Black" film to reach theaters in 10 years, and the best performing film since the franchise began in 1997.

In "MIB 3", Smith returns to his role as Agent J, half of a secret-agent duo that keeps order among aliens disguised as humans and living on Earth. Tommy Lee Jones plays his partner, Agent K.

The new installment finds J traveling back to the 1960s to save a younger version of K, portrayed by Josh Brolin.

"MIB 3" knocked superhero team "The Avengers" to second place after three weeks at No. 1.

The global, billion-dollar blockbuster collected $37 million in North American theaters from Friday through Sunday. It also became the fastest film to cross the $500 million domestic threshold, getting there in 23 days and shattering the 32 day record set by the 2009 film "Avatar", which went on to become the world's highest-grossing movie of all time.

In third place, board game-inspired action movie "Battleship" brought in $10.7 million during its second weekend in theaters.

Sacha Baron Cohen's spoof "The Dictator" took the fourth spot with $9.6 million through Sunday, pushing new low-budget horror film "Chernobyl Diaries" into fifth place with $8 million.

Total figures for the U.S. Memorial Day long weekend will be released on Monday.

Sony Corp's movie studio released "Men in Black 3." "The Avengers" was distributed by Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios. Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. studios distributed "Chernobyl Diaries." "Battleship" was released by Universal Studios, a unit of Comcast Corp. Viacom Inc's Paramount Studios distributed "The Dictator."

Dragon arrives at space station in historic 1st

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The privately bankrolled Dragon capsule made a historic arrival at the International Space Station on Friday, triumphantly captured by astronauts wielding a giant robot arm.

SpaceX is the first private company to accomplish such a feat: a commercial cargo delivery into the cosmos.

"There's so much that could have gone wrong and it went right," said an elated Elon Musk, the billionaire maestro of SpaceX.

"This really is, I think, going to be recognized as a significantly historical step forward in space travel ? and hopefully the first of many to come."

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit used the space station's 58-foot robot arm to snare the gleaming white Dragon after a few hours of extra checks and maneuvers. The two vessels came together while sailing above Australia.

"Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail," Pettit announced from 250 miles up once he locked onto Dragon's docking mechanism.

NASA controllers applauded as their counterparts at SpaceX's control center in Hawthorne, Calif. ? including Musk ? lifted their arms in triumph and jumped out of their seats to exchange high fives. The two control rooms worked together, as equal partners, to pull off the feat.

The company's youthful-looking employees ? the average age is 30 ? were still in a frenzy when Musk took part in a televised news conference. They screamed with excitement as if it were at a pep rally and chanted, "E-lon, E-lon, E-lon," as the 40-year-old Musk, wearing a black athletic jacket with the SpaceX logo, described the day's events.

Alcohol was banned from the premises during the crucial flight operation, Musk noted, "but now that things are good, I think we'll probably have a bit of champagne and have some fun." The crowd roared in approval.

Although cargo hauls have become routine, Friday's linkup was significant in that an individual company pulled it off. That chore was previously reserved for a small, elite group of government agencies.

Not only that, the reusable SpaceX Dragon is designed to safely return items, a huge benefit that disappeared with NASA's space shuttles. It's the first U.S. craft to visit the station since the final shuttle flight last summer.

Two hours after the capture, the crew attached the Dragon to the space station as the congratulations poured in.

"Now that a U.S. company has proven its ability to resupply the space station, it opens a new frontier for commercial opportunities in space ? and new job creation opportunities right here in the U.S.," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement.

"Nearly 43 years after we first walked on the moon, we have taken another step in demonstrating continued American leadership in space," said Apollo 11's Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step onto the moon.

The bell-shaped capsule? 19 feet tall and 12 feet across ? is carrying 1,000 pounds of supplies on this unprecedented test flight. The crew starts unpacking Saturday and will have just under a week to unload the food, clothes and other contents.

After this test flight, SpaceX ? officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? has a contract to make a dozen delivery runs. It is one of several companies vying for NASA's cargo business and a chance to launch Americans from U.S. soil.

SpaceX launched the capsule from Cape Canaveral on Tuesday with its Falcon 9 rocket. On Thursday, the Dragon capsule came within 1? miles of the space station in a practice fly-by. It returned to the neighborhood early Friday so Pettit, along with Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers could capture it with the station's robot arm.

First, the capsule went through a series of stop-and-go demonstrations to prove it was under good operating control.

NASA ordered extra checks of the Dragon's imaging systems as the capsule drew ever closer to the space station, putting the entire operation slightly behind schedule. At one point, SpaceX controllers ordered a retreat because of a problem with on-board tracking sensors.

Given that the Dragon is a brand new type of vehicle and this is a test flight, the space agency insisted on proceeding cautiously. A collision by vehicles traveling at orbital speed ? 17,500 mph ? could prove disastrous for the space station. NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini, said the way the SpaceX team handled the problem and the entire operation was "remarkable."

President Barack Obama is pushing commercial ventures in orbit so NASA can concentrate on grander destinations like asteroids and Mars. Obama's chief scientific adviser, John Holdren, called Friday's linkup "an achievement of historic scientific and technological significance."

"It's essential we maintain such competition and fully support this burgeoning and capable industry to get U.S. astronauts back on American launch vehicles as soon as possible," he said in a statement.

Without the shuttle, NASA astronauts must go through Russia, an expensive and embarrassing situation for the U.S. after a half-century of orbital self-sufficiency. Once companies master supply runs, they hope to tackle astronaut ferry runs.

Musk, who founded SpaceX a decade ago and helped create PayPal, said he can have astronauts riding his Dragon capsules to orbit in three or four years.

The space station has been relying on Russian, Japanese and European cargo ships for supplies ever since the shuttles retired. None of those, however, can bring anything of value back; they're simply loaded with trash and burn up in the atmosphere.

By contrast, the Dragon is designed to safely re-enter the atmosphere, parachuting into the ocean like the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules did back in the 1960s. Assuming all goes well Friday, the space station's six-man crew will release the Dragon next Thursday after filling it with science experiments and equipment.

Going into Tuesday's launch of this Dragon, NASA had contributed $381 million to SpaceX in seed money. The company has invested more than $1 billion in this commercial effort over the past 10 years.

Facebook IPO: Congress Joins the Investigation

The snowball continues to roll into a full-out avalanche of bad for Facebook as Congress has decided to join the circle of skeptics and investigators to look into company?s now-famously mishandled initial public offering.

According to Reuters, the House of Representatives and the Senate both have committees that will be looking into the problems and losses attached to Facebook?s IPO. Add this to class action lawsuits and the personal lawsuits ? one wonder if all of that will eventually amass into one big lawsuit-ing conglomerate ? and Facebook really has covered all of the bases with this snafu.

Sean Oblack, a spokesman to the Senate Banking Committee, said the review will focus on ?issues raised in the news? and that staff will be conducting briefings with ?Facebook, regulators and other stakeholders.?

Marisol Garibay, a spokeswoman for the House Financial Services Committee, said staff there is also receiving briefings on the issue and ?gathering information and facts.?

?While no hearings specifically focused on this IPO are planned at this time, the Committee will have hearings over the coming weeks where this topic is likely to be raised,? she said in a statement.

Some of the points of interest that Congress may be looking at are the peculiar ?glitch? NASDAQ experienced the morning of Facebook?s IPO that delayed the trading of Facebook shares and what role Morgan Stanley played in deceiving investors about Facebook?s earnings.

It?s seriously been nothing but bad news for Facebook since its IPO. Honestly, it?s hard to recall when this was actually still considered a good idea.
